Why is my AC running but blowing warm air?

When the system runs but the air isn’t cold, the first things I check are the outdoor unit and the filter. If the outdoor fan isn’t spinning and the unit is humming, it’s almost always a failed capacitor — the most common summer repair in Raleigh, and one I can usually fix on the spot. A clogged filter or dirty evaporator coil can also block cooling and lead to a frozen coil. If both units run and airflow is fine, the cause is usually low refrigerant from a leak, which needs a proper leak search rather than just a top-off.
Why does my heat pump have ice on it in winter — is it broken?

A light frost on the outdoor coil in cold, damp weather is normal, and every 30–90 minutes the unit runs a defrost cycle — you’ll see steam, hear a whoosh, and the fan may stop briefly. That’s the system working correctly, not a malfunction. What’s not normal is a solid block of ice covering the coil, ice that never clears, or the fan running through thick ice. That usually points to a failed defrost board or sensor, a bad reversing valve, or low refrigerant. If you see heavy ice, switch to emergency heat and call us.
Why is there ice on my indoor coil or the copper line in summer?

Ice inside the system means the coil is getting too cold, which happens for two reasons: not enough air moving across it, or not enough refrigerant in it. Airflow problems come from a clogged filter, a failing blower motor, or closed vents; refrigerant problems come from a leak. Turn the system to “off” and set the fan to “on” so the ice melts before we arrive — running it frozen can damage the compressor. Never just add refrigerant to a system that keeps freezing; find the leak first.
Why does my system turn on and off every few minutes?

Short cycling wears out compressors and blowers fast. Common causes are a thermostat mounted near a vent or in direct sun, a dirty outdoor coil that overheats the compressor, low refrigerant tripping the pressure switch, or a clogged condensate line lifting the float switch. On heat pumps in the Triangle, I also see it when the auxiliary heat is misconfigured. Try a fresh filter and make sure the outdoor unit is clear of leaves and pollen; if it keeps cycling, a technician needs to check pressures and safety switches.
Why is water leaking from my air handler or furnace?

In our humid climate, an air conditioner pulls gallons of water out of the air every day, and it all has to leave through the condensate drain. When that line clogs with algae or dust, water backs up into the pan and onto the floor — or a float switch shuts the whole system down. Other causes include a cracked drain pan, a failed condensate pump, or a frozen coil melting after the unit shuts off. Clearing the line and adding a safety switch is a quick, inexpensive fix that prevents ceiling and floor damage.
My furnace clicks but won’t light. What’s wrong?

Clicking without ignition usually means the igniter has cracked or the flame sensor is dirty — both are common on gas furnaces after a few seasons and both are inexpensive to replace. If the furnace lights and then shuts off within seconds, a dirty flame sensor is the most likely cause. If it never even clicks, I look at the pressure switch, the inducer motor, and the control board. Any time you smell gas, shut the system off, leave the house, and call your gas utility before calling us.
Why is my heat pump running constantly and still not keeping up?

Heat pumps are designed to run long cycles in cold weather, so constant running below 35°F is often normal. But if the house never reaches the set temperature, the usual culprits are a dirty filter or coil, low refrigerant, a stuck reversing valve, or auxiliary heat that isn’t engaging when it should. A quick test I recommend: if the air from the vents feels barely warm — under 85°F — the heat pump itself is the problem, and it’s worth a diagnostic before your power bill tells you first.
How much does HVAC repair cost in Raleigh?

It depends on the part. A capacitor or contactor replacement typically runs $150–$300; a flame sensor or igniter $150–$350; a condensate drain clearing $100–$200; a blower motor $400–$900; a control board $350–$700; and a refrigerant leak repair with recharge $400–$1,200 depending on the leak location and refrigerant type. Our diagnostic visit is $85, and it’s applied toward the repair when you approve the quote. I always give a written price before starting so there are no surprises.
Should I repair my system or replace it?

I use a simple rule: if the system is over 12–15 years old and the repair is major — compressor, coil, or a refrigerant leak on an R-22 unit — replacement usually makes more financial sense, especially with today’s efficiency gains. If the unit is younger and the repair costs less than a third of a new system, repair it. Because we don’t sell or install new equipment, our repair-or-replace recommendation is based only on the numbers, not on a sale. Most Raleigh heat pumps last 12–18 years with maintenance, and I’ve kept plenty running well past that.
What should I do before the technician arrives?

If the system is frozen, turn cooling off and leave the fan running so the ice clears. Check the breaker panel and the outdoor disconnect, and make sure the thermostat has fresh batteries if it uses them. Clear a path to the outdoor unit and the air handler or furnace, and note any error codes on the thermostat or mini-split display. Don’t replace the filter before I arrive — seeing how dirty it is helps me diagnose airflow issues. This information speeds up the visit and gets your system fixed on the first trip.
